He is also making wine in spots like Chitry, Irancy and Epineuil; wines that a hardcore Burgundy buff might consider second-rate, but for Vauthier it's more of an accessible canvas to start work on.  This is Burgundian Pinot as you have perhaps not tried before - the fruit has a cranberry-like tartness and there are herbal notes of cinnamon and clove wafting at the edges. There are autumnal-feeling savoury notes, like piles of old leaves, but the main thing is the wine just bursts with energy and is a real thrill to drink. Finesse is high with this one, despite its initially unruly appearance.
